πŸ“– TERMINOLOGY πŸ“–

This section is all about abbreviations and jargon, and should help you understand most of the technical ESO lingo.

🎯 Targeting & Skill Types 🎯

There are two categories into which all healing skills fall:

πŸ’  Burst : A burst-heal is the kind of healing skill which heals once when you cast the skill. An example would be Combat Prayer. This is the kind of skill you would use whenever an ally takes a lot of damage in a short timespan and is dangerously low on health. Burst-heals have high healing numbers, but only heal once per cast.

πŸ’  Heal-over-Time ( ‘HoT’ ) : A Heal-over-Time skill is the kind of healing skill which you cast once and which continues healing allies in several ticks for some time after you cast it. Each tick heals less than a burst-heal, but all the ticks taken together are usually comparable to a single burst. This is the kind of skill you try to keep up as much as possible - heal ticks will heal up small bits of ambient damage and stop damage from stacking up to the point where you need to burst. HoTs usually target the allies in range with lowest health and who need healing the most, else they may target based on proximity (depending on skill). An example of a HoT is Illustrious Healing. The damage equivalent of a HoT is a DoT - Damage-over-Time skill.

Each of the healing skills in both of the above categories has a specific target. Several skills have different component effects, and each of these components may have a different target too. Here’s a list of different target types a skill can have:

πŸ”Ή Self-Targeted : These are skills which target yourself and are cast for an effect on yourself. Examples are any class self-buffs. Because we’re talking about Healers here in HH though, these aren’t as important for our guides

πŸ”Ή Single-Target ( ‘ST’ ) : These are skills with a single allied/opponent target. In our guides we abbreviate this to ‘ST’. An example is Force Pulse.

πŸ”Ή Area of Effect ( ‘AoE’ ) : These are skills which cast in an area on the ground, usually in a circle or a rectangle (depending on skill), and apply an effect to all allies or opponents standing in the area. An example is Illustrious Healing. All AoE heals in the game can heal a maximum of 6 people per tick - skills with multiple ticks (all HoTs) retarget each tick, so they can heal >6 people across their entire duration.

πŸ”Ή Multi-Target ( ‘MT’ ) : These are skills with multiple allied/opponent targets, but which just choose and target specific people directly with the skill effect, without making an area first. An example is Radiating Regeneration, another example is Echoing Vigor from the Alliance War / Assault skilltree. A nice thing about MT skills is that they allow for a lot more mobility, since the healing isn’t tied to an area on the ground and moves with allies.

πŸ”· De-/Buffs We Care About πŸ”·

As mentioned in the Phoreword in what-healers-do, while our first job is to heal up ambient damage that can’t be avoided, most of our time and energy is spent providing support so that everyone else can be the best versions of themselves.

Here’s a list of the named buffs and debuffs you may run into as a healer, and where they’re typically sourced from - there may be other sources too though! See https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Online:Buffs for a full list of de-/buffs and their sources.

Named buffs and debuffs are unique - while they stack with each other, two buffs with the same name from different sources will not stack. Note that Major and Minor count as two separate buffs, e.g. Major Intellect and Minor Intellect will stack with each other, but Minor Intellect from two different sources will not stack.

Note: Sources shown include Skills [And the Skilltree they’re in] and Sets (or other item-related sources).
